Deaf President Now!

For eight days in March 1988, students of Gallaudet University in Washington, DC, protested the appointment of a hearing president. Demanding truly representative leadership, the students broke the cycle of pity and condescension that defined their experience at the worldโ€™s first university for deaf and hard of hearing students. Actor Nyle DiMarco, a Gallaudet graduate, makes his directorial debut with this documentary that memorializes a watershed moment not only in American disability rights activism but also in the history of US student movements. Key players in the protest lead the audience through the events of those heady days and relate how they overcame sexism, ableism, and paternalism to ensure an equitable future for the generations of Gallaudet students that followed. Narrated through American Sign Language and voiceovers, Deaf President Now! relates the involving story of an under-reported triumph.

MEANWHILE

MEANWHILE is a docu-poem in six verses about artists breathing through chaos. In dynamic collaboration, Jacqueline Woodson (text), Meshell Ndegeocello (soundscape), Erika Dilday (support), M. Trevino (structure), and Catherine Gund (direction) combine artistsโ€™ expressions with historical and observational footage to unveil a rare cinematic mediation about identity, race, racism, and resistance as they shape our shared breath. Centering breath as a symbol of resilience, MEANWHILE captures raw, unfinished momentsโ€”dancers in rehearsal, artists midway through their workโ€”focusing on the act of creation. Rooted in the upheavals of 2020, the film uses breath as its through-line to symbolize collective survival. It invites viewers to witness the process of liberation and be present in the โ€œmeanwhileโ€โ€”a moment of creation, struggle, and hope that transcends fixed identities.

Do You Feel Anger?

Marin Theatre closes its 24-25 season with the Bay Area premiere of a hilarious workplace play that the New York Times called 'Flat-out hilarious. Ingenious and inspired.' An outrageous comedy that highlights the absurdity and danger of a world where some people's feelings are prioritized over others. Sofia is hired as an empathy coach at a debt collection agency, where she finds her work cut out for her. The employees can barely identify what an emotion is, much less practice deep, radical compassion for others. As they stumble towards enlightenment, hidden tensions of this carefree workplace bubble to the surface, leading to uproarious and eye-opening revelations. The New Yorker lauded it as 'Disquieting as it is funny. A rare throwback to classic absurdism.' Please be advised this production contains adult language.
