Among the most dynamic and virtuosic drummers in jazz, Kendrick Scott presents the West Coast premiere of his multimedia project Unearthed. Combining poetry, visuals, string quartet, and a jazz ensemble, this moving work memorializes the Sugar Land 95 — the unidentified Black prisoners and forced laborers found buried in Sugar Land, Texas, in 2018. This performance, part of Terence Blanchard's UpSwing series, features the words of Houston Poet Laureate Emeritus Deborah D.E.E.P. Mouton and explores the brutal history of forced labor of prisoners at Texas factories. Kendrick Scott is known for his collaborations with celebrated musicians and his spiritually charged compositions.

A native of Venezuela, Simon has worked extensively with renowned artists and has co-founded the ensemble Afinidad. His impressive career has included explorations into traditional folk music, leading to the formation of Ensemble Venezuela. This performance promises to showcase his deep musical influences and creativity, making it a not-to-miss event for jazz enthusiasts.
Jeff Denson Trio
Today, the art of jazz expression and the world of formal education are fully intertwined, both demanding powerful commitment. Pursuing both is immensely challenging. Bassist/composer Jeff Denson is meeting that challenge. Fully immersed in both worlds since the late 1990s, Jeff has balanced a full career as both an acclaimed performing musician and a highly respected educator. Currently leading or co-leading four distinct ensembles, Jeff has toured extensively throughout the U.S. and Europe with both his own groups and as a sideman with some of jazz’s finest artists. Jeff is also exploring new ground with his ensemble and is working on his opera, WEBS.
